One of my favorite places to visit is the San Diego Zoo. Here are some pictures I took there at Christmas in 1997.

Balboa Park

Treehouse

As you take the aerial tram across the zoo, you get a great view of Balboa Park.

You also get a view of the treehouse from above.

Panda on Ground

Panda in Tree

Everybody loves the pandas and San Diego has two: here's one relaxing on the ground.

And here's the other, having a snack in a tree.

Flamingos

Meerkat

My favorites have always been the flamingos.

And the meerkats (which are a lot like prairie dogs.

Emerald Boa

Albino Rattlesnake

I've always enjoyed the reptile displays: here's an emerald boa.

And a white rattlesnake. (San Diego usually has a reptile oddity or two!)

Lizard

Monitor Lizard

Here's an odd little lizard.

And a very large (2 meter) monitor lizard.

Okapi

Peacock

The okapi are very graceful and pleasant to look at.

This peacock didn't open its tail, but was very beautiful just sunning itself.

Bighorn Sheep

Klipsbok

The bighorn sheep is very impressive.

But the little klipsbok are just cute.

Hippo

Hippo

The hippo is always interesting and San Diego has a great viewing window to see them from below.

Unfortunately, I didn't have enough light and so had to content myself with views from above the water.

Gavial

Rhino

The gavial spent all of its time below the water, but I managed a fairly good shot in spite of the poor lighting.

The rhino appeared to be asleep on its feet and didn't move at all.

Koala

Bactrian Camel

The koala is also very popular and they have a nice home in San Diego.

This bactrian camel appears to disapprove of everything.
